Wilderness Practicum

This two-day, overnight Wilderness Practicum is designed to allow you to put into practice the concepts you learned in the classroom.

Students taking this course should have completed both Map Reading and Low-Tech Land Navigation to have gained the concepts they'll need here.

DAY 1

10:00 – 13:00 Mapless Dead Reckoning -- With only a compass, and no map, you'll navigate a course through the woods, changing directions at will, and still make it back to your starting point.

13:00 – 14:00 Break for Lunch

14:00 – 17:00 Cross-Country Trek in Daylight – From the Park’s Southern Boundary to Deer Lake. You'll navigate through the woods using a map and a compass (and the sun if visible) to find baselines and checkpoints along the way.

17:00 – 18:00 Activate Emergency Exit Plan by Following a Safety Bearing of 270° from Deer Lake. If the sun is visible, you'll use the sun to guide you. Otherwise, you'll use a compass. After arriving at the hard road, go to the rendevouz point.

18:00 – 19:30 Break for Dinner

Dark (3 hours) Cross-Country Trek at Night – From the Park’s Southern Boundary to Deer Lake. You'll navigate through the woods using a map and a compass (and the moon and the stars if visible) to find baselines and checkpoints along the way.

Dark (1 hour) Activate Emergency Exit Plan by Following a Safety Bearing of 270° from Deer Lake. If the stars or the moon are visible, you'll use them to guide you. Otherwise, you'll use a compass. After arriving at the hard road, go to the rendevouz point.

DAY 2

09:00 – 14:00 Lone Pine Search and Rescue Scenario. Hasty teams of this “SAR organization” will include three people each who will be given coordinates to navigate to in search of a lost hiker. One team will find the lost hiker, provide emergency first aid, and radio the other teams to come help them carry the injured hiker out.

In this exercise, students will use the skills they have learned such as UTM, using baselines and checkpoint, imaginary runway, dead reckoning, and so on.
