How I Built This Site

If you've ever wanted your own web site that actually gets traffic, read on...

This page is off-theme from the rest of my site, but I want to share with you how I built FloridaAdventuring.com. Maybe my experiences with web will be directly helpful to you--if you want a solid web presence.

After writing Surviving the Wilds of Florida, my book about how to fend for yourself in Florida's wild places, it hit me that the next logical step was to tell people where those great wild places are. I thought about writing another book, but, hey, this is the 21st century. What better way to reach people than on the world wide web? You can reach a lot of people on the web--IF you know how.

Unfortunately, most people--including me, back then--don't know how. For the great majority of web masters, their focus is on putting up a pretty--sometimes flashy--site. And many of them are excellent at doing just this. They use FrontPage, Dreamweaver, and other quality software to create some very fancy pages.

Problem is, they get little or no traffic. It's like having a modern and beautiful billboard in the middle of the desert. It's beautiful, alright, but hardly anyone sees it.

Yet, there are sites on the web--even some with simple, plain vanilla design--that get loads of traffic. What's the reason? A fancy design by itself won't normally attract traffic. You attract traffic with lots of well-constructed, quality, keyword-focused content pages that please your visitors--and the search engines.

So, exactly how do you construct quality, keyword-focused, visitor pleasing, search-engine friendly content pages? I certainly didn't know, until....

I stumbled on to SiteBuildIt.

SiteBuildIt (SBI) is the brainchild of Dr. Ken Evoy, MD, a respected--and respectable--Canadian emergency room physician (an ER doc, no less!) who has a passion for web commerce. On a world-wide web filled with hucksters, Dr. Ken is the real deal. He knows his stuff.

SBI hosts this web site, but to call Dr. Ken's company a simple web host would be to seriously--and I mean seriously--understate what they do. Ken says he wants to OVERdeliver on his customers' expectations. And does he ever do that. I told him once that he even OVERdelivers on his promise to OVERdeliver.

The guidance I have received from SBI along the way has been invaluable. If you want your own web site, I am pleased to personally recommend them to you. For about 300 bucks a year, not only do they host your site, but also help you understand how to really and honestly get the click with good quality content.

I just renewed my subscription to SBI today (Jan 10, 2008), which at least in part prompted me to write this page. It got me thinking about how happy I am to have someone who can show me the ways of the web, and handle a lot of technical stuff I'd just as soon not mess with. I'm glad I ran into SBI. If you want a solid web presence, I'm confident you'll be glad you did, too.

Any detailed explanation I could give about SBI, other than to say I am more than pleased with their service, would probably do them an injustice, so I'll let Dr. Ken speak for himself, after you click on his video below.

Oh, and there's more, don't miss this.

Best wishes in your web adventures,

Reid
