Great work, Keith. I just finished re-reading your account of a nighttime adventure paddling from the Harney River Chickee up through Broad Creek and out to the Gulf. I got my Everglades map out and traced your journey by following your words.
The waterpath looks so easy on the map with that blue dotted line indicating the Wilderness Waterway. But, as you know, there is no blue dotted line on the water, and in the mangroves and especially at night, it's easy to get disoriented. At least the current helped. I'll remember that. Hey, how about taking a GPS next time? I know you shouldn't rely on them alone, but they're especially useful at times like you described.
Your story makes me want to drop everything here and head back down to the Everglades to do some more roaming through the mangroves. Marjorie Stoneman Douglas was right. There's no place else like it.
By the way, we got stuck one time in the Nightmare in August during low tide. But we did manage to make our way out to the Gulf and up to the mouth of the Broad River to continue on our journey.
Wonderful account. Also, you have a great web site: http://www.evergladesdiary.com/ Anyone interested in the Everglades backcountry should visit it.
I hope you'll come back and post again some time.
Kind regards and best wishes.
